The goal of this pilot project was to test Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) as a proof-of-concept tool for monitoring surface-nesting seabird colonies within the Washington Islands NWRs and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS). Objectives are: • Determine degree of disturbance to wildlife • Evaluate quality of video and still frame photographs • Assess capacity to collect overlapping, sequential still frame shots This remote wilderness coastline in Washington State is difficult to survey and yet these surveys are key to assessing annual seabird population indices and associated threats such as climate change and marine debris.
